Surname Saturday – Mulligan (Ireland / Michigan / Illinois / Canada / Ohio

James MULLIGAN is third great-grandfather. He was born on 7 December 1812 in Dublin, Ireland. By 1850, he is living in the United States. According to a genealogy compiled by my family, his daughter, Sarah Jane, was named Jane after James' sister. He may also have had a brother, Joseph, who was listed as living with James in the 1850 census, born in Ireland, and the right age to be a sibling. Also, according to the compiled genealogy, there is a note that reads: "James Mulligan's father kept a tavern a couple of miles from Dublin, at the cross-roads." Beyond these few clues, I have no idea who James' parents were, or if there are other siblings.  My direct line ancestors are in blue.

First Generation

James married second, Sophia --?--, between 1850 and 1860. Sophia was born about 1823 in New York and died on 5 February 1865 in Oakland County, Michigan. Because the fate of Margaret is unknown and the date of marriage for James and Sophia is also unknown, the children below could belong to either Margaret or Sophia. However, James does list in his marriage record that Sophia is his mother.

Known children from this marriage were:

Surname Saturday – Garrison (Ontario / Michigan / Illinois)

My earliest known GARRISON is James Manly GARRISON, who was born in Ontario, Canada, in 1861. I'm still trying to determine, with some level of certainty, who his parents are. I know his mother's name was Susan, and I suspect that she herself was a GARRISON, but I need to do some more digging to learn the truth. James and his mother relocated to Detroit, Wayne, Michigan about 1871, and James later moved to Chicago, Cook, Illinois.

First Generation

1. James Manly GARRISON, son of Susan (--?--), was born on 26 December 1861 in Picton, Prince Edward, Ontario, Canada, and died on 23 May 1909 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. Fearless Females – Favorite Female Ancestor

Back in 2010, in honor of Women’s History Month, Lisa Alzo created a list of writing prompts for each day during the month of March.  I didn’t participate in 2010, so I’m going to take the opportunity to participate this year, since Lisa was kind enough to resurrect her prompts for 2012.

Do you have a favorite female ancestor? One you are drawn to or want to learn more about? Write down some key facts you have already learned or what you would like to learn and outline your goals and potential sources you plan to check.

I’d have to say that my favorite female ancestor is my third great-grandmother, Sarah Norton (Webster) Coffinger Mulligan (1828-1894).  Sarah is my pivotal connection to the Webster line, as well as the reason behind the joining of my parent’s families.

As children, Sarah’s parents, Calvin Price Webster and Betsey Parks, moved with their families to Oakland County, Michigan, where they later married.  Sarah first married Abram Coffinger, apparently in 1850 in the neighboring county of Macomb, and together they had five known children.  Abram died in 1863, so Sarah married James Mulligan (my third great-grandfather) in 1865.  James and Sarah had three children:  Edward, Sarah Jane (my ancestor), and Margaret.  At one point, James and Sarah moved to Flint, Michigan, where James later died in 1879.  By 1892, Sarah had moved to Chicago with daughter Sarah Jane (evidence suggests that son Edward was there before his mother and sister, although they may have all moved together by 1891).

Sarah’s move to Chicago, albeit, possibly not solely her decision, was what started the joining of my parent’s family.  Her daughter Sarah Jane, married James Manly Garrison on 23 January 1893 in Chicago.  Their daughter, Emma, married John Ward McMahon on 26 May 1923 in Chicago.  John and Emma’s daughter, Joan, married John Francis Cahill on 6 November 1943 in Chicago.  And finally, their only son, my dad, married my mom in 1967 in Chicago.  Most of mom’s family had settled in Chicago in the late 1880s.  Many of the families of both my mom and dad coexisted in Chicago in the same general vicinity for decades.  Then each set of my grandparents relocated to the same Chicago suburb.

It’s amazing how the decision of one person can lead to the chain of events that create our existence.  Had Sarah and her daughter not moved to Chicago, I would certainly not be here writing about it!

My Revolutionary War Patriots

1776

In honor of Independence Day, I thought I’d write a post about my ancestors who are Revolutionary War patriots.

Robert Parks

Robert PARKS is the patriot I went in under for membership to National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR).  His service is listed as a private serving under Captain Benager Leffingwell.  Below is a muster roll from 1777; it is the only one I have found for him.

Robert is my sixth great-grandfather.  He was born 4 December 1737 in Voluntown, Connecticut and died in 1810 in Windham, Connecticut.  Following is my direct line to him (in bold):

  1. Me
  2. Joseph CAHILL (1945-1989), m. Jean MILLER (living)
  3. Joan Garrison McMAHON (1927-1980), m. John Francis CAHILL (1922-1984)
  4. Emma Jane GARRISON (1901-1970), m. John Ward McMAHON (1902-1962)
  5. Sarah Jane MULLIGAN (1870-1947), m. James Manly GARRISON (1861-1909)
  6. Sarah Norton WEBSTER (1828-1894), m. James MULLIGAN (1812-1879)
  7. Betsey PARKS (1801-1856), m. Calvin Price WEBSTER (1802-1856)
  8. Robert PARKS (1776-1863), m. Mary “Polly” Wheeler SMITH (1781-1844)
  9. Robert PARKS (1737-1810), m. Elizabeth HALL (?-?)

Jonathan Webster

Jonathan WEBSTER took the Oath of Fidelity in October 1777 at Glastonbury, Connecticut.  Jonathan in my seventh great-grandfather.  He was born 5 October 1705 in Hartford, Connecticut and died 14 November 1781 in Glastonbury.  Following is my direct line to him (in bold):

  1. Me
  2. Joseph CAHILL (1945-1989), m. Jean MILLER (living)
  3. Joan Garrison McMAHON (1927-1980), m. John Francis CAHILL (1922-1984)
  4. Emma Jane GARRISON (1901-1970), m. John Ward McMAHON (1902-1962)
  5. Sarah Jane MULLIGAN (1870-1947), m. James Manly GARRISON (1861-1909)
  6. Sarah Norton WEBSTER (1828-1894), m. James MULLIGAN (1812-1879)
  7. Calvin Price WEBSTER (1802-1856), m. Betsey PARKS (1801-1856)
  8. Aaron WEBSTER (1775-1823), m. Sarah NORTON (1780-1823)
  9. Ashbel WEBSTER (1733-1801), m. Rachel PRICE (1737-1813)
  10. Jonathan WEBSTER (1705-1781), m. Mabel RISLEY (1718-1871)

Solomon Norton

Solomon NORTON is apparently my sixth great-grandfather, although I have not been able to prove this through actual records.  According to NSDAR, he is a patriot, having served as a private under Captain Bostwick in New York.  There are three members listed that have gone in under his supposed daughter Sarah, but again, I have not proven this connection through any records.  By all accounts, Solomon was born 12 May 1751 in Farmington, Connecticut and died after 1837 probably in Villanova, New York.  Following is my direct line to him (in bold), assuming Sarah is his daughter:

  1. Me
  2. Joseph CAHILL (1945-1989), m. Jean MILLER (living)
  3. Joan Garrison McMAHON (1927-1980), m. John Francis CAHILL (1922-1984)
  4. Emma Jane GARRISON (1901-1970), m. John Ward McMAHON (1902-1962)
  5. Sarah Jane MULLIGAN (1870-1947), m. James Manly GARRISON (1861-1909)
  6. Sarah Norton WEBSTER (1828-1894), m. James MULLIGAN (1812-1879)
  7. Calvin Price WEBSTER (1802-1856), m. Betsey PARKS (1801-1856)
  8. Sarah NORTON (1780-1823), m. Aaron WEBSTER (1775-1823)
  9. Solomon NORTON (1751-after 1837), m. Sarah REXFORD (1757-?)

A big salute to all those who have served or are currently serving our country.

Also, a reminder that anyone can access the NSDAR’s Genealogical Research System to search for patriots.   Celebrate the 4th of July by doing a little research on your Revolutionary War patriots.

James Manly Garrison (1861-1909)

James Manly GARRISON, son of James or John GARRISON [1] and Susan —?—, [2] was born on 26 December 1861 in Picton, Ontario, Canada. [3]  James died on 23 May 1909 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois at the age of 47. [4]  He was buried at Oakridge Cemetery in Hillside, Cook, Illinois on 26 May 1909. [5]

It is likely that James’ father died before 1871, as he is not listed in the 1871 Canadian census.  Additionally, nearly all mentions of Susan in the Detroit city directories indicate she is the widow of James (sometimes John).

It is not known when or where Susan died.  I have a receipt from Mt. Olive Cemetery in Chicago issued to J M Garrison for the remains of Susan Garrison dated 29 April 1894.  It is quite possible it was for his mother Susan.  No death record has been located in Detroit (her last known residence) or Chicago, the presumed place of burial.

James Manly GARRISON, with son James Norton, ca. 1896.

Another speculation on James’ mother Susan is that she may have been Susan DOLAND.  In the 1871 Canadian census, she is listed in the same household as a Doland family; the ages suggest she could be a daughter.  No additional research has been done to confirm or disprove this theory.

Between 1871 and 1874, James moved from Ontario, Canada to Detroit, Wayne, Michigan.  At some point between 1881 and 1893, he relocated to Chicago, Cook, Illinois.  James returned to Ontario prior to September 1895, where his first son, James Norton GARRISON was born.  By 1897 he was back in Chicago until his death in 1909.

On 23 January 1893, James married Sarah Jane “Jennie” MULLIGAN in Chicago. [6]  Sarah, the daughter of James MULLIGAN and Sarah Norton WEBSTER, was born 16 April 1870 in Flint, Genesee, Michigan. [7]  Sarah died on 26 April 1947 in Chicago. [8]  She was buried at Elm Lawn Cemetery in Elmhurst, DuPage, Illinois on 29 April 1947. [9]  Sarah was raised in Flint, and by 1892, she was living in Chicago.

Children of James Manly GARRISON & Sarah Jane MULLIGAN

James Norton GARRISON, born 19 September 1895 in Petrolia, Lambton, Ontario, Canada; [10] died in September 1962 in Ohio. [11]  He married Lorene or Lorraine PLATT 15 July 1922. [12]

Joseph Webster GARRISON, born 4 January 1898 in Chicago; [13] died 23 July 1930 in Chicago. [14]  He never married and had no children.

Emma Jane GARRISON, born 3 November 1901 in Chicago; [15] died 20 October 1970 in Elk Grove Village, Cook, Illinois. [16]  She married John Ward McMAHON, son of Timothy James McMAHON and Sarah Jane WARD, [17] 26 May 1923 in Chicago. [18]

Robert P GARRISON, born 12 November 1904 in Illinois (probably Chicago); [19] died 19 December 1984 in Kissimmee, Polk, Florida. [20]  He married Florence BOAM, daughter of William Harrison BOAM and Lillian Elizabeth ELMORE, [21] September 1929. [22]

Next Research Steps

  • Determine the identity of James Manly GARRISON’s father.  Then determine when he and Susan married, as well as when and where he died.
  • Research further to see if Susan —?— is actually Susan Doland.
  • Determine when and where Susan died.

Sarah was first married to Abram Marshall COFFINGER.  The were married on 5 May 1850, in Michigan.  Together they had at least five children:  Esther Besty, Calvin William, Amos Parks, Emma Amelia, and Mary Ellen.  Abram died on 29 September 1863 in Pontiac, Oakland, Michigan.

James and Sarah had at least three children together:  Edward Peter, Sarah Jane, and Margaret Elizabeth.  Margaret died on 6 February 1886 at the age of 12.

James died on 8 September 1879 in Flint, Genesee, Michigan.  Sometime between 1888 and 1892, Sarah, Edward, and Sarah Jane relocated to Chicago.

Saturday Night Challenge – 08/08/09

Randy’s challenge for this evening is as follows:

List your 16 great-grandparents in pedigree chart order. List their birth and death years and places.

Figure out the dominant ethnicity or nationality of each of them.

Calculate your ancestral ethnicity or nationality by adding them up for the 16 - 6.25% for each (obviously, this is approximate).

If you don't know all 16 of your great-grandparents, then do it for the last full generation you have.

Write your own blog post, or make a comment on Facebook or in this post.

Here’s mine:

pedigree

I have 10 German, 4 Irish, 1 Canadian, and 1 French.  Further generations on Sarah MULLIGAN would also have English.  But according to the way Randy asked us to figure this, I am: 63% German, 25% Irish, 6% Canadian, and 6% French.

Saturday Night Fun – June 6, 2009

The challenge for Randy’s Saturday Night Fun is:

  1. Which of your ancestors were alive in 1909?
  2. Tell us where your ancestral families were living in 1909. What country, state, county,  city/town, etc. Who was in the family at the time? Use the 1910 census as "close enough."
  3. Have you found each of these families in the 1910 census?
  4. Write a blog post about your response. Or write a comment to this post.
  5. Have fun. Learn something!

Here’s mine (those in bold are direct line ancestors):

Third great-grandmother, Amelia (a.k.a. Emilie), was living in Chicago, Cook, Illinois in 1910, with her son Heinrich “Henry” (my second great-granduncle) and his family.  Amelia is a mystery to me; she was married to a WACH and had three children.  She then married a SCHULTZ and had one daughter.  I have no idea what her maiden name is or the first names (and fates) of her two husbands.

Another mystery woman, my third great-grandmother, Bridget Ward, was living in Chicago, Cook, Illinois in 1910 with two daughters, Sarah and Rose, and Sarah’s husband Timothy McMAHON.  Again, I have no idea what Bridget’s maiden name is, or the first name of her husband.  I am not able to find her after 1910 in censuses or death records.

My second great-grandmother, Mary (or Anna or Marie) BRAUN Stoffel, was living in Chicago, Cook, Illinois with her seven children:  Henry C, Anna E, Margaret, Charles L, Elsie A, William, and George.

Thomas Robert CAHILL, my second great-grandfather, was living in Aurora, Kane, Illinois in 1910 with his wife, Margaret “Maggie” MILLETT and four of his six children, Margaret, Thomas Michael, John F, Robert Emmett.

My second great-grandfather, James Manly GARRISON, was living in Chicago, Cook, Illinois in 1909, when he died on 23 May 1909.  His wife, Sarah Jane “Jeanie” MULLIGAN was living in Chicago, Cook, Illinois in 1910 with her four children, James Norton, Joseph Webster, Emma Jane, and Robert Parks.

My second great-grandparents, Herman LEPPIN and Minnie HAEMFIFLER, were living in Chicago, Cook, Illinois in 1910 with their four children, Alma Mary, Henry August, Herman Paul, and Charles F.

My third great-grandparents, Timothy McMAHON and Margaret RYAN, were living in Chicago, Cook, Illinois in 1910 with four of their five children, John Joseph, Nellie, Jerimiah William, and Elizabeth V.   Margaret’s grandson (through her daughter from another marriage), Francis J, was also living with them in 1910.

Emil Charles MILLER, my great-grandfather, was likely living in Chicago, Cook, Illinois in 1910, but I have yet to find him in the census.

My great-grandfather, George ROTTMAN, also eludes me in the 1910 census, but he was likely living in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.

My second great-grandparents, John SCHWARTZ and Margaret KRAMER were living in Aurora, Kane, Illinois in 1910 with their six children, Henry Ferdinand, John J, Catherine M, Mary J, Theresa K, and Herman J.

My Irish Surnames

The theme for the 13th edition of the Carnival of Irish Heritage and Culture is Irish names.

Share with us the surnames in your Irish family tree, but don't just stop there. Do a little research and tell us the origin of one or more of those surnames, the stories of how they might have changed over the years, or tales of how they've been mixed up and misspelled, etc.

Want to focus on your family's given names instead? Share with us the story of your ancestors' Irish first names (given at birth or nicknamed later), the "grandparent" nicknames in your Irish family tree, or any other Irish name stories that you'd like to share.

I decided to focus on four of my Irish surnames.  All of them become brick walls when trying to research them in Ireland, so I thought this surname exercise might help open new doors.

Each surname heading is a link to the Internet Surname Database record for the surname, which you can use to find out more information about the surname.

Cahill

Many of the resources I have found indicate that Cahills were prevalent in County Clare, County Cork, County Kerry, and County Tipperary.  Right now, I can trace my Cahills back to my third great-grandfather, Michael Cahill, who lived in County Kilkenny.  Do they trace back further to these other counties?  I hope to answer that question someday.

Researching this name in the U.S. hasn’t been too bad.  More often than not, it is spelled and indexed correctly.  I know of many spelling variations, such as Cale, Cail, Cahil, Cahell, Kahill, Khill, Cayhill, Kayhill, and the original form of the name, O’Cahill.  And although I haven’t had too much trouble, it is on this surname that I thought of creative ways to perform searches.  You can read more about that in my post Bingo! (and a few lessons learned).

McMahon

I can trace my McMahons back to my third great-grandfather, Timothy McMahon, of County Tipperary (which was kindly noted on his son’s death certificate).  I have not done much research on this surname outside of the U.S. as of yet.

This surname can be tricky while doing research.  I’ve found that it’s usually spelled correctly, however, when indexed, it can be McMahon or Mc Mahon.  So I always have to do at least two search passes to find whomever I am looking for.  In the U.S., I’ve not run across any instances where Mac is used instead of Mc, but I always include that in my searches when I can’t find Mc, just in case.

Ryan

This is an interesting one for me.  I have two Ryans, both third great-grandmothers, but from two different lines in my paternal line.  Margaret Ryan hails from County Tipperary, where she married Timothy McMahon (above).  I have no idea as to the whereabouts of Mary Ryan, who was born in Ireland and likely died there.  She married John Millet, and their daughter, Margaret, married into my Cahill line.  I do know that their daughter was born in County Kilkenny, so at least that’s a starting point.  I do wonder if Mary and Margaret are related somehow, but have yet to track down their parents.

Mulligan

I can trace my Mulligans back to my third great-grandfather, James Mulligan, of Dublin.  Again, this is one I have not focused on outside of the U.S.  I imagine it will be an interesting search, simply because Mulligan is a popular name, and Dublin is, well, the largest city in Ireland!

What Once Was, Is No More

Some of my research focus lately, has been on my PARKS/PARKE family,  partially because it had to do with lineage for DAR.  And fortunately, I've had two wonderful people do some legwork for me in Oakland County, Michigan.

A month or so ago, Granny Pam was kind enough to go to her genealogy library and send me copies of so resources, such as cemetery and marriage records collected in some books.  This was a tremendous help in connecting some dots.

About the same time, David Weller took a trip to Beach Road Cemetery in Troy, Oakland, Michigan.  With snow on the ground, it was difficult find much, but he did get a photo of the memorial that was erected that shows all the people buried there, along with their burial dates.

David went back to Beach about a week or so ago and sent me several photos.  This cemetery is likely considered "abandoned" and is in really bad shape.  David did manage to find two stones that belong to members of my family.  I believe he said that the one is one of the only  ones still standing.

Edward W. PARKS is my fourth great-granduncle.  According to one source, he married a Marcia MARTIN, date unknown.  The gravestone indicates that Fanny M. was his wife.  One in the same?  Probably, but more digging is necessary to confirm or disprove.

Now for the sad part.  The photograph below has been in my possession for years, and it took some time to figure out how it connected to the family.

On the back of the photo, the following was written:

The tall monument marks the resting place of our Great-grandfather Robert Parks the markers Grand father and Grand mother Webster.  Some day I may get a better picture they are buried close to the front fence.  Taken Dec. 5, 1921.

Well, I don't know who took the photo, although I imagine it was my second great-grandmother, Sarah Jane "Jeanie" MULLIGAN.  The picture is the gravestone of Robert PARKS, and his first and second wives, Mary "Polly" SMITH and Elizabeth IRISH.  I'm guessing that the two stones to the right of the obelisk are that of Calvin Price WEBSTER and Betsy PARKS, as they were also buried in Beach and would agree with the note on the back of the photo.

Calvin and Betsy are my fourth great-grandparents.  Betsy is the daughter of Robert and Polly, sister of Edward mentioned earlier in this post.  Robert and Polly are my fifth great-grandparents.

Assuming that Sarah took this photo, she would have had 26 years to come back and take "a better picture" before she died.  I'm not sure if she did, but I'm betting she'd be disappointed to see the pictures I have now, nearly 88 years later.

What a shame.  I wish I had the resources to go and reset the stone.  Heck, I wish I had the resources to fix up the whole cemetery!  But in a sad sense, I do have "better" pictures of the  stone, thanks to David.
